Click Here To Find Your New Electric Service Provider The Mid-Kansas Electric Company, LLC (MKEC) recently announced it closed the transaction which resulted in the acquisition of the Kansas Electric Network properties formerly owned by Aquila, Inc. The assets involved in this transaction, which closed on April 1, 2007, were purchased by MKEC for a base purchase price of $235.3 million. Aquila also sold its eight percent leasehold interest in the Jeffrey Energy Center (JEC) to Westar Energy. Under a separate power purchase agreement, Westar will sell the energy related to the 8 percent interest in JEC to MKEC. MKEC President and CEO Earl Watkins said, “We are very pleased the transaction is closed so the MKEC Members can begin their service to the new customers.” He continued, “We are also fortunate to have these new employees in the cooperative family. They will be essential to the continuation of a high level of service to those who depend on these cooperatives for their electricity.” Customers will receive retail electric service from MKEC through the six cooperatives that will provide both operations and maintenance services throughout the service area. These businesses include the provision of water supplies, satellite television, wireless broadband internet access, cellular telephone service, commercial electrical services and propane delivery services. The MKEC members also own and manage Sunflower Electric Power Corporation, a generation and transmission service provider with headquarters in Hays, Kansas . Sunflower provides a generation portfolio of 595 megawatts and it operates a 1,200 mile system of high voltage transmission lines built for the purpose of service its Member Systems.
